I am a Manchester-based freelance journalist, writing for national and
regional press. I have five years' experience in the industry, as a
newspaper reporter, feature writer and news editor, as well as for music,
lifestyle and trade publications. Past clients include The Guardian, The
Independent, The Sunday Express, Inside Housing, The Big Issue and weekly
women's magazines.
NEWS AND FEATURES
I have covered a wide range of topics – from crime to health, social affairs, the environment and local government – and reported from the civil and criminal courts, inquests and tribunals. I have accompanied police on dawn drug raids, spent days inside prisons and met counter-terrorism chiefs, politicians and public figures. I have written people-led, investigative pieces on issues including homelessness, domestic violence, urban regeneration, and the sex trade. To date, my work includes sensitive in-depth interviews with victims of rape and childhood sexual abuse, relatives of murder victims, refugees, prisoners, prostitutes and drug addicts. I have worked as chief reporter at the Flintshire Evening Leader, investigations reporter at the North West Enquirer and reporter at the Manchester Evening News.
MUSIC AND LIFESTYLE
I am an experienced music journalist, having worked as north listings editor for DJ Magazine and contributed features, interviews and club reviews to City Life and other publications. I have travelled across Europe for holiday pieces and to cover overseas music events, and have braved acupuncture, hypnotherapy, self-defence classes and other challenges for first-person newspaper and magazine features.
ABOUT ME
I have a degree in European politics and French, and a post-graduate diploma (NCTJ) in newspaper journalism. I am trained in the Freedom of Information Act, shorthand and media law, and am a member of the National Union of Journalists. I am open to story ideas and available for commissions, lectures and media consultancy work.
