Europe’s gypsies and travellers have been meeting in Appleby to trade horses for more than 300 years. Today, Appleby Horse Fair is major event that brings more than 50,000 visitors to the village. But beyond the cliches and marketing hype, the fair remains a key social event for many travelling people – and one of the few times they find themselves in the majority.
