So it’s happening…

Today I’m going to travel to Luton by coach and then fly to small-town Romania, arriving early tomorrow morning. We’re going to Urziceni, a town of 17,000 people about 60km from Bucharest. What I’ll see and learn there I don’t know but at the moment I’m keeping everything crossed that people will be ok with the camera. I doubt I’ll have internet while I’m away so back in 10 days or so… ciao.

Well, Urziceni is indeed a small a town even for Romanian standards. However, Romania is not a jungle, and Romanians are not savages! Moreover, we do have Internet connection in Romania and we’ve definitely seen cameras before! Of course, if you are planning to visit a Roma slum in Urziceni, there are some risks but honestly, I don’t think poor neighborhoods around the world are safer or more beautiful than the Romanian ones!
Moreover, we, as a nation, are not crazy, we do not discriminate against traditional Roma communities, however, I think it is only natural to have a problem with those Gypsies(and their numbers are growing!) that make us victims in our own country!

What a ridiculous comment, I almost trashed it. You have clearly not read my blog. Shame you are simultaneously both so defensive and closed minded, it reflects poorly on you as an individual. I haven’t made any generalisations about Romania or Romanians.

Trash it and consider me narrow-minded but mind you, it doesn’t take generalizations to convey a distorted message, sometimes ambiguity does the trick!

P.S. I did read your blog!

I just think if you’re going to leave pompous and patronising comments on people’s blogs you should ensure you understand the context of the series that you are commenting on. If you look back on mine it is very clear to see that this latest post is part of a series on a photography project for a university MA course, which dates back several months and a journalism project which i’ve been working on for 2 years now. The related posts are even usually listed at the bottom of my posts so aren’t hard to find.
I also feel insulted on behalf of the people who I am working with and staying with this week that you have the nerve to throw around horrible expressions like ‘roma slum’ without knowing anything about them. On the one hand you say Romanians aren’t prejudiced and it’s true that the Romanians who I know in the UK generally aren’t. But in the next paragraph you hang yourself with your own words. I usually can’t be bothered with this kind of pointless anonymous debate but you’ve really hit a nerve. I have the right to be ambiguous on my own website, although I don’t believe many other people would read my post as being so. You however have chosen to comment on there, you didn’t have to. Sorry but I think you are the one being careless with your words.
    Best wishes anyway
